I watched a Benie and Cecil DVD a while back. Yes hockeysub12 it may take a few takes but in the end they tend to respect me even more when instead of getting a pain pill there in 10 min it can be delayed to 30-45 minutes you know just hold on I'm coming. Last week while scaning the cable shows on one station they showed a show of the singing group called the Monkeys I believe they are from the 60's. I seen it before that was like a long time ago. It seems shows made back then were so well made 20-30-40-50 years later they continue to do very well. I liked the Monkeys one. This is a good topic. Someone asked me to ask do any of you remember a show called my mother the car. They said it was made in the 60's and Dick Clark had America band stand it was hip and brought music into the homes long before MTV

You know what made Dick Clark and Bandstand so successful? He "got it" when it came to music. He was always featuring new styles right before they caught on. One incident I remember was when the Beatles stopped touring and started the "physcadelic" movement - rather than perform live on TV again, they made video - Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. Strawberry Fields was pretty avant guarde. It seemed none of the hip teenagers in the audience got it - they all wanted the old "She Loves You" Beatles. Dick Clark was the only one who got it- the style, innovation, growth of the group and its impact to music as a whole.

I just came across some old Dr. Who episodes - the ones with Tom Baker. It was a pretty cheesy show, but I really liked it

I also remember now that I had a bit of a thing for the woman who played Sarah Jane:

random british interlude time...

growing up, the tv shows i'd stay up late fore were:

whose line is it anyway - the uk original version not the us one

WCW wrestling (even though it was 6 months old and the kids with satellite used to take the piss when people i used to talk about turned up in wwf the next tv week

gaelic football - if youve not seen this or hurling, find some now and watch it...

absolutely - a scottish comedy series with an unforgettable sketch where one of the cast is standing on the border with england and shouting abuse at the top of his lungs at the english

citizen smith - a comedy about a failed communist group of urban guerrilas in north london. the "tooting popular front" only ever had 4 members if my memory serves me correctly.

cartoon time - this was cartoon time with a difference - depressing and mentally scarring eastern european produced balls of "WTF?" that our channel 4 used to show. example plot: bunch of birds ub springtime - one cant lay an egg and gets depressed. 3 other birds make a fake egg with an alarm clock inside and sneak it into her nest. the bird with the fake egg sits on the thing until the alarm goes off and the egg "hatches" the rest of the birds laugh at the odd looking baby, the bird gets depressed again, loses the plot and tries to feed the alarm clock regurgitated worms, bird is that her baby wont eat and can't fly. cartoon ends, credits in russian.

i was 6. i still remember it vividly... that type of memory span should be reserved for family functions, trageies or useful knowledge - not fucked up cartoons that make no sense... bloody channel4

on the upside though, channel4 gave us the "red triangle" warning... AKA "skin flick warning - set yer VCR giong now" alert...

I've read through this whole thread this morning, loving it. There isn't a show mentioned that I didn't watch.

God -- Flip Wilson, all the Brit stuff on PBS, the Saturday morning Cartoons (Bugs Bunny represents a core attribute in American culture).

TVLand keeps some of this stuff alive -- but it isn't the same. There is not a single thing on TV that truly grabs onto the gut of the times and the people and shakes like a motherfucker the way some of these old shows did -- or maybe I'm just lost in a moment nostalgia.

I mean, fucking A -- the original cast of Saturday Night Live? Tell me that wasn't a shining moment in frigging history?

I dunno -- maybe I'm just getting old...

I remember looking forward to that show. I was really disappointed when the original cast left or was fired or whatever happened. It's had its moments since then - like Eddie Murphy or Chris Farley - but it's never been the same.

Of the Brit shows, I just realized I didn't think to mention Fawlty Towers.

[BANANA]Don't mention the war![/BANANA]

Oh, and the Young Ones episodes that were shown on MTV.

I mentioned this one in another thread. Does anyone remember "Solid Gold"? Not so much for being a classic show, but for the T&A factor.

That was like watching a porno when I was a young teenager. Well built female dancers, bumping and grinding like crazy in skimpy outfits.

I also agree with SNL with the original cast. Ground breaking stuff.

Hell yeah, I was like 13 when that show debuted. Erotic viewing options were pretty limited, especially in the pre-cable (not to mention pre-internet) days. I think all of my friends watched it too.

Another real big one for me was the "Midnight Special". It came on late on Friday nights. It was one of the few shows to see bands perform live. In the pre-MTV days, there weren't many ways to see live bands. Now you can see stuff like that anytime. It turned horrible tho in the early '80's around '83 or so. They were trying to compete with MTV and changed their format and it started sucking big time. But in the '70's it was great.

I remember trying desperately to stay awake, to watch it in my early teens. Having been at school all day that day it was tough. That was when I was first learning guitar, and I tried to absorb everything I saw.

My dream was to perform on that show and American Bandstand. Unfortunately it just wasn't meant to be.

Another was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. But I preferred the Midnight Special.

Okay, this is going WAY back......

Dean Martin show- I can't remember if it was a regular show or just specials that were on from time to time. I wasn't such a fan of his, as I was the "Gold Diggers". I was so young, and I knew I loved watching them, but I didn't know why :)..... now I know.

As for a kid show, on Sat. mornings, and this is probably really obscure, was the Krofft Supershow, with "Kaptain Kool and the Kongs".

This male watched a variety of stuff over the years, but very few things that are truly missed. this male has managed to build a collection of most of the "missed" shows on DVD, including West Wing, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Babylon 5, Earth: Final Conflict (Season One only!), Newsradio, It's Gary Shandling's Show, Mystery Science Theater 3000 and The Critic. Only recently, the underrated kids' show Reboot has come out in complete form. That one is much missed, as it truly evolved over time.
Nowadays, very few shows appeal to this male. Mythbusters, The Simpsons (despite some faltering) and, taped overnight, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Even watching movies on cable has grown obnoxious, as they not only censor, speed it up, and ruin the aspect ratio, but crowd the screen with huge ads during the show. The local library rents them on the cheap, and that has become the best way to see any movie outside a theater.
But as to the main question, no: this male doesn't miss the old shows like The Monkees, The Six Million Dollar Man, Lost in Space, and so on. Even then, some of their gaping flaws stood out to this cynical kid and made it tough to enjoy them....

Cool Re: TELEVISION SHOWS

I do have some episodes of The Third Man on DVD. I would like to see more of those shows. One day I'll have to get the radio series. It Takes a Thief is almost as good: RTN carried that on weekends but I can't get them reliably any more off HDTV.

The Avengers is a classic, of course. And I'd like to see Julie Newmar in My Living Doll.

Brief, indeed: March 1st to April 4th 1980. Pink Lady was the name.

I saw some of the episodes on DVD & they were quite good!

Sure, that's a familiar name. Not sure how many episodes this male saw, but quite a few in his spotty youth. They were okay, but back then the kink was communicated in ways that didn't penetrate a young skull.
Silly trivia question: what series was spun off of Love, American Style and lasted one hell of a lot longer?

The next trivia question would be what shows spun off that show?

While I'm *Still* watching Ultraman and Space Giants and Johnny Sokko type shows on tape and disc, since my original list I discovered The Tick (cartoons and Live Action).

Made from one of the funniest comic books of all time (original run by Ben Edlund), it actually works as a show (unlike most comic book adaptions).

Of course, this was from a friend bringing me a set - I haven't turned on my television for broadcast stuff in YEARS!!

Arguably the most shows spun off of anything. Congratulations on obviously knowing which show. Care to spill it for the others, or wait for any guesses?

Oooh, yes forgot to mention The Tick! What great shows they were! Already have Season 1 of the cartoon and the complete live series (and the Wonder Woman homage would make a great Domme, as would the actress playing Her).

If Josh Whedon writes a great script, it should be a good role.

Actually, meant Captain Liberty on The Tick, who seemed like an obvious Wonder Woman homage. But yes, if only Joss Whedon had a shot at doing Wonder Woman, it would have been far better than the abomination the network nearly foisted on fans...

I do remember a Super-heroine on the Tick. Let's just hope the studio heads don't screw it up!
